Episode 21: HMO Colostrum

Hi, I'm Rebecca from Path Forward Formulator. Welcome back to our 3 Minute Thursday series, where we demonstrate features of our app while building a formula in 3 minutes or less. With the popularity of colostrum powders, in today's edition of 3 Minute Thursday, we thought we'd formulate a colostrum powder and include human milk oligosaccharides from our friends at Kiowa.

Let's start by choosing Formula, Add New, Powder, and all others. We'll go one scoop per serving and 20 servings per container with a supplement fax box, and we are going to use our flavor and sweetener system generators, which are optional to you.

For the flavor generator, this is designed to get you a cost target estimate for when you get to the benchtop stage and are flavoring your product. You choose between natural or artificial and low, mid, high, which is a correlation between cost and intensity of flavor. The ingredients we're going to use will have a fairly neutral taste profile, so we're going to choose natural and low.

For the sweetener generator, it works the same way, but goes one step further and puts together a starting point for your sweetener system. I will also choose natural and mid here. Now we can choose our ingredients. Let's start with putting in our 2 HMOs from Kiowa. We will add in 3 SL at two hundred milligrams and 6 SL at four hundred milligrams.

Next, we can add in some lactoferrin at two hundred milligrams and then we'll add in our colostrum at 3 grams. Our cost estimates have calculated on the right and we have a metrics tab where you can see all of the costs contributing to the total estimate.

A quick look at our fact sheet tells us that we are happy with it. So we can go ahead and save our formula. Once saved, we can view the record. And if you scroll down to the ingredients, each one has a dropdown that shows you the total weight needed for the label claim. This is a combination of potency, overage, and manufacturing variance calculations.

Let's export the spec sheet and look at the supplier section, where we can see the appropriate contact for Kiowa for both of the HMOs we used in the formula. And that is a colostrum powder with HMOs in 3 minutes or less. We look forward to seeing you in our next 3 Minute Thursday.
